Explaining Bioidentical Hormones

A Natural Approach to Balance

As women and men approach mid-life, many often wonder whether or not hormone therapy is the right option for them. Countless studies have shown that traditional (synthetic) hormone therapy can increase the likelihood of various types of cancer and heart disease. However, many are now taking a natural approach to hormone balance with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

With natural bioidentical hormones, women and men can find relief from symptoms of hormonal imbalance without the risks that come along with synthetic hormones.

What are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones - or bio identical hormones - are derived from naturally occurring sources, such as yams and soy, and are designed to replicate the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced naturally by our bodies. Based on your hormone levels, a specialized compounding pharmacy can individually tailor a bioidentical hormone regimen specifically designed for you.

On the flip side, synthetic hormones are intentionally different. Pharmaceutical companies can't patent bioidentical hormones because each regimen is specifically formulated to treat each patient on an individual basis. Instead, they manufacture synthetic hormones that are patentable.

Are Bioidentical Hormones Safer, More Effective than Synthetic Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are more appealing to the general public when dealing with menopause or andropause because they are derived naturally and our bodies can metabolize them properly. There is incresing evidence that suggests that natural hormones play an important role in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, traumatic brain injury, infertility, pospartum depression, decrease "bad"cholesterol level, protect aganst glutamate toxicity. Another advantage of using bioidentical hormones is that they are specifically designed to match your individual hormonal needs - unlike synthetic hormones, which use a one-size-fits-all approach to symptom relief.

There is an overwhelmingly large body of evidence that supports the claim that bioidentical hormone therapy is safer and more effective than synthetic hormone replacement. However, it's important to remember that no drug, supplement or herb is 100 percent safe - there is always a chance that you may experience an adverse reaction. That's why it's critical for women and men to consult with a hormone specialist before beginning any hormone therapy regimen, to safe-guard themselves from side effects.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Side Effects vs.Synthetic Hormones Side Effects

Many people seek out bioidentical hormone therapy because they are concerned about the risks of conventional hormone therapy. Naturally they have questions about possible BHRT side effects.

Conventional (non-bioidenical) synthetic hormone therapy

often used  to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness and low libido.Their side effects are well documented . The body recognizes that these synthetic hormones are foreign toxins and cannot metabolize their chemical make-up. This oftentimes leads to a variety of unwanted side effects ranging from non-life threatening to more serious medical conditions.

Common side effects associated with the use of synthetic hormones include:

  • Blood clots

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Cancer

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) studies reported that women who used synthetic hormone replacement therapy were faced with a higher risk of developing breast cancer and heart disease. Soon after the WHI findings were released to the public, many women began seeking out natural alternatives to traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Our natural bioidentical hormones are much safer. Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to the hormones produced naturally by your body. They fit perfectly in all the receptors they're supposed to fit in and your body can't tell these hormones apart from its own natural hormones. That's why they don't typically have actual side effects, per se.

Reaching optimal hormone levels is a balancing act that may take some time to get right. Your hormones need to be tested a few times and your dosages may be adjusted over time as we look for the ideal treatment plan for you. During this process, any hormone imbalances that may occur can cause side effects. In some cases, they may be similar to the symptoms you were initially experiencing - or they may even be worse.

The adverse effects that may occur depend upon which hormone levels remain unbalanced. While seeking optimal hormone balance with bioientical hormone therapy, you may experience a variety of such effects, including but not limited to:

  • Headaches

  • Mood swings

  • Increased acne

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Breast tenderness

  • Itching at the application site

It may be frustrating to continue to see the same kinds of symptoms that you're seeking treatment for, but as your testing continues and your hormone levels are adjusted, you will feel much better. Once your hormones have reached an ideal balance, you are likely to see a drastic reduction or absence of these adverse effects. The adjustment period may take several visits, but it's well worth the wait!
